Instead of using phone book pages (I didn't have an old one big enough), I used Sulky Paper Solvy, which is 8 1/2 x 11 in. like paper, and does not have to be removed but dissolves in water. It costs more, but saves time.Category: Quilting
Type of item: Functional
For: Charity
Style: Traditional, Whimsical
What was your inspiration?
This was a class project to use up scraps. I chose the pink and purple groups from my stash of scraps.
What are you most proud of?
I'm proud of following the direction the fabric led me in. My focus fabric central stripe was not a bold color but worked better as a background pattern, which led me to arrange the blocks to show the diamond shapes formed by the contrasting color groups. I also added extender blocks to the borders to be sure to have enough yardage to miter the corners. And for the binding I continued the scrappy look by joining leftover block fabric in random lengths to make binding strips.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
If you don't like the idea of laboriously picking out paper foundations, consider spending a little more to get some kind of water soluble paper-like stabilizer. I used Sulky's Paper Solvy.
