I found this old fashioned, round-ish side table on Craigslist for $8. I had seen this project on a popular home magainze website and thought it was a great idea. After removing the front door and the plastic decor that was under the glass top, we spray painted (not as well as we should have) and I made a cushion. I kept the glass top of this side table in place, as it was more functional to ...Read full instructions »

Old side table with interior storage, paint (we used spray paint), fabric and batting for a cushion or store bough custion that fits inside. I spent about $20 total on this project ($8 for the side table, $5 spray paint and $7 for fabric). I used the stuffing from an old pillow that I was no longer using. Because this was to be a pet house, I wasn't too particular about the stuffing, as long as it was soft. I did put a zipper in the cushion so it could be washed.
What was your inspiration?
I saw this in a popular DIY magazine. Because I don't have publishing rights, I'm afraid to name the magazine and the site you can find it. All the same, there is nothing to it and you can make it simply by removing (or opening) the doors, removing the top, if you like and painting it in your choice of colors. You can either make a cushion or buy one that would fit. Doesn't everyone have a parent or grandparent that has one of these hanging around in their garage or storage?
What are you most proud of?
It was SO easy. My husband failed to completely paint the inside, but that will be touched up when time permits. The most difficult part was making the cushion, which I would do differently if I had to do it over again.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Go for it! Whatever you do to it is bound to be an improvement on this very dated piece of furniture. We did not prep the wood in any way. We used spray paint, not knowing if it would look good, but if did. Just remember to paint the inside as thoroughly as the outside...haha.
