Perfect Bombshell Dress

I made a lace shrug to go with it.

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Sew Retro: Perfect Fit Bombshell Dress »

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Retro / Vintage

Materials

silk shantung

What was your inspiration?

I wanted a 1940s-50s dress to wear for my cousins wedding and when I saw the course, Sew Retro-the perfect bombshell dresses, I knew it would be perfect! I added the collar on top and tapered the skirt a little. Though I wouldn't do this again as the material I used wasn't stretchy and sitting down was a little tight.

What are you most proud of?

I haven't sewed anything since I was a teenager so I'm very proud how this turned out. The bodice has steel boning in it so it really has structure.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This project takes a while. Especially if you haven't sewed anything for a while or are a new sewer. I have a newborn at home so it took me extra long to complete but I did it in the end and now I love it!

Gorgeous! You look amazing .... and you made it yourself! Brava! I wonder if you could cut the skirt pieces on the bias to allow a little stretch when you sit? I don't know as it probably wouldn't 'bounce' back into the right shape when you stand.

Wow you look fabulous! I love how you've trimmed the neckline with the darker contrast, really makes it pop. Did you need to make a lot of adjustments to the pattern. By looking at your dress I'd of thought you of done a full bust adjustment. I'm currently doing one for the bombshell dress. Finding it a little tricky to get the lines nice

Thanks, yes I did have to make lots of adjustments on the bodice and bust. A muslin is your best friend when doing this. I made most of my mistakes on that. Then by the time I moved onto the dress fabric I was a pro! Just take your time with it. It will be worth it in the end.
