What materials did you use? There is a great backstory to this project. 20+ years ago I made a silk dinner ensemble for my Mother to take on the cruises that she and my Dad loved to take. Mom passed five years ago from Alzheimer's. As I went through her things, I couldn't bear to give away that ensemble as she always looked so beautiful in it. Then I signed up for this class. When trying to decide what fabric to make the pattern from I went to my stash and there was the ensemble! I was able to scavenge enough yardage from the skirt (which I had shortened for her when long gowns went out of style) to make a sleeveless version of the top. And guess what, my husband and I leave Monday for an Alaskan cruise - and the top is definitely going with me to wear for dinner with a cute black shrug and knit black skirt with gored panels. I'm thrilled that Mom's ensemble is once again going to sea. :)

What are you most proud of? Having gotten enough fabric out of the old ensemble to make something so meaningful for myself.

What advice would you give someone starting this project? Barbara is an excellent teacher. It helps if you already know how to sew (which I did), but with the 30 second replay feature, you can listen over and over as much as you want until you completely understand a step. Definitely download all the extra materials and read through them. They are most helpful.

It's a wonderful story and you look perfectly lovely in your top!! Your mother would be proud!!! (Interesting, the difference in fabric shade between the photos of you and of your mother. . . I'm assuming this is because of technological improvements? Whatever, it's beautiful!)

The picture of my mother was over 20 years old and was just a snapshot. I scanned it in to my computer. The photograph was pretty old and had lost some of its color.

Thanks for that great story. Lost my dad in October and I'm planning to make at least a quilt out of some of his old clothes. Love that you could use your mom's clothes for this!

So sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my Dad just six weeks after my Mom. I highly recommend you making a quilt or something else from your Dad's things. It's a very sweet time of good memories as you handle fabrics he has worn.
