Category: Knitting

Type of item: Functional

For: Children

Style: Eco-Friendly, Cute, Retro / Vintage, Mod, Whimsical

Materials

Some unknown green worsted weight yarn, size 5 straight needles, scraps of yarn in various colors for the flowers, 6 buttons, thread in varying colors, a red zipper, reused yarn from the lining of a jacket

What was your inspiration?

I couldn't find any pencil cases that I liked in the store, so I made one myself! :)

You can see my Ravelry project page for it here:
http://www.ravelry.com/projects/doodlenoodle/school-stuff

What are you most proud of?

Although my sewing skills are sub-par, I am proud of how I lined it and added a zipper! :) I also like my embroidery job!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This is so easy.

I CO 58 stitches with worsted weight. I used size 5 needles and mine ended up being 15 inches long. What did I do wrong? Yours does not look near this long...exactly what is the length supposed to be?

Hmm.. This might be because your gauge is looser than mine. Mine was about 9". It's no fault of yours-- what I recommend is a smaller needle size or a thinner yarn. Or, if you want to do it the long way, take your gauge and see how many stitches exactly until you can get 9". (I hope this was helpful, at least just a little!)

Did you sew the zipper in BEFORE you sewed the side seams? Were you able to do it with a sewing machine (I've never been able to get the tension right to sew to anything I've knitted) or by hand? I would love to make this but I want to get these obstacles out of my head first, lol

I sewed it into the pouch shape first, then measured out my lining fabric, make a pouch out of that, and then hand-sewed the fabric into the knitted case. Then I added the zipper. Hope this helps! :)

What does BO mean please and is mattress stitch another name for blanket stitch?
doodlenoodle on craftsy.com
Oct 16, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
BO means Bind Off, and blanket stitch is *not* the same thing--- a mattress stitch tutorial can be found here: http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring04/mattress.html
