This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Stupendous Stitching: Adventures in Surface Design »

Difficulty:

Category: Embroidery

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Whimsical

Materials

White cotton fabric (repurposed curtain material); ric rac, sari cord, rattail, perle cotton, glass beads, sequins, metallic thread

What was your inspiration?

When I had finished the couching and machine stitching stage I realised I had the outline of the hill above my farm in Pembrokeshire (Wales, UK), then I saw I had the water of my local reservoir, the fields, beaches and the sea. It was all accidental but I suppose it demonstrates that I am inspired by my surroundings.

What are you most proud of?

All of it! I had never tried anything like this before (I usually sew tote bags and clothing). I hadn't done any hand embroidery since I was eight years old and I've only recently tried machine embroidery.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Jump in and have a go! It's such a fun thing to do and I found that it really made me think of more things I can do with my sewing machine (other than straight stitch, zig-zag and buttonholes!)

I forgot to ask, How did you make the sheep?

Thank you for your lovely comment. The sheep are made of French knots for the body and heads with straight stitches for the legs.

I just LOVE your piece. Isn't it amazing how things just come together in the end? Being creative is like that and now you have experienced that for yourself!

Thanks Carol! this is very much a sampler piece. I had only a little things to work with at the beginning and made it bit by bit as everything arrived by mail order. I think I'll take the sections I like and work them into a new project. Thanks you so much for the course - so beautifully taught and really inspiring.

Like the way you have put characters such as fish, lobster crab bumble bee and bird into your project, however, my favorite is the sheep in the field. Great work

Thank you for your lovely comment. I love the sheep best too. I have a small flock and as I embroidered I kept seeing the personalities coming out in my stitching. The third one from the right is my children's pet sheep 'Chops'!
