Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Quilting Big Projects on a Small Machine »

Instructions

I used cling wrap on the top of the quilt to draw out my quilting design. It worked great except the needle did gum up. I found that if I quit at the end of each run down the quilt and cleaned the needle before going on, I could quilt each length without mishap.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Traditional

Materials

Cotton fabric, thread, polyester batting

What was your inspiration?

I love this quilt block and a group of friends did a round robin. This is the block chose and everyone made 2 blocks for my quilt. I added several others to make the quilt.

What are you most proud of?

I am relatively new to free motion quilting. This was the easiest I've done so far since I drew the design out on cling wrap on the top of the quilt before I quilted it. I used a sharpy marker to put the design on the wrap and then let it dry before beginning to quilt. It was so much easier to get a clean quilt line.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Plan your quilting stitches before you start to quilt. Drawing out the lines helps you to decide if what you picture will turn out.

I also switched to a blue topped needle. It reduced the need to clean the needle of the glue from the cling wrap so often.

Thank you. I love yellow and wanted to use it for the background. Many in the group did not have color criteria. They wanted a scrappier look. It was fun experience.

Did you quilt by the block? Press n seal is also great to use for quilting projects, I use it with machine embroidery as well.

No, I quilted a block width from top to bottom for one side and bottom to top on the other to reduce the bulk in the machine. I did the border at the end.

Great quilt! Did you provide the fabric or did everyone use something of their own? Interesting technique with the cling wrap. I can see where it might make the needle gummy, but I'm glad it worked for you.
