Quilting: Pat's USMC quilt

Pat's USMC quilt

Instructions

This could be adapted to any theme by selecting different bandanas. Select some solids that coordinate and choose a pattern for the alternate pieced squares. The sashing/borders can be solid or print to coordinate.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Men

Style: Traditional, Casual

Materials

Bandanas were used for the center and corner blocks. The pieced blocks were made with standard quilter's solids. It is machine pieced and machine quilted.

What was your inspiration?

A dear family friend graduated from the US Naval Academy and was commissioned into the USMarine Corps. This was his graduation present.

What are you most proud of?

That I finally finished it! I broke my finger after I had it pieced, and it took a long time to get back to it to finish it!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Play around with the design a little bit to find a combination of squares that you like. I use graph paper and colored pencils to get a good idea. You can even take pictures of the bandanas and print them out (very small) to play with the design.

I am working on a Harley Davidson quilt using bandanas for my my brother. The center is a bald eagle that I paper pieced. When I finally get it done I will upload a picture. Yours is very eye catching! I am sure it will be treasured.

Where did you get the center globe, eagle, anchor square? My son is a former Marine. Once a Marine always a Marine. Once a Marine's Mom always a Marine's Mom. God bless our Marines and all our military. Semper Fi!

I found both styles of bandana online - the dark ones I got from a webcatalog Sgt Grit http://www.grunt.com/marine-corps-bandana-1 and the red one from ebay (though I have seen similar ones on Amazon.com and Sears. My daughter looked at the USMC Exchange in Norfolk, VA and did not find either bandana there. Maybe at a larger MCX? They were between $2 and $5 online, though. Thanks for all the lovely compliments! I finished my son's USN quilt this week - pictures coming up soon!

Beautiful quilt! I've seen bandanas similar to these at Hobby Lobby. I am working on making a quilt for my husband who has been a Marine for 18 years, out of his old woodland cammies to include his name tapes and breast pockets that include the EGA.
