This project is so easy. You can do it three different ways, depending on how much cake you want in it. I use cake mix in a box for this cake.
1. bake a white cake in one of those disposable aluminum pans. Wait until cake is cool. while cake is cooling, slice fresh strawberries (as many as you want. Some people don't like a lot of fruit in the middle of their cake) and mix together with a jar of strawberry glaze. Set in the refrigerator for just a bit, 5 minutes tops.
2. mix one box of powdered sugar to one 8 oz. box of cream cheese. Cream cheese must be room temperature in order to mix easily. I would recommend using a beater. You can mix it by hand if you prefer, but you can get it creamier with a beater. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla for flavor.
3. Once cake is cooled down, spread the cream cheese mixture over the top of it. Place in the refrigerator long enough to set the cream cheese. You don't want the strawberries sinking in when you put them on next. I would say refrigerate at least 15 to 20 minutes.
4. Once the cream cheese is set, spread your strawberry mixture over the top of the cream cheese layer. Place in refrigerator for 10 minutes.
5. Get the cool whip ready. you don't want it too warm when you put it on, but not frozen either.
6. Take the cake out of the refrigerator and pile on the cool whip. The more the better. You want to
make sure that it covers the entire top of the cake.
7. Once you have done that, place back in the refrigerator to set the cool whip. While it is setting, you can get the ingredients ready that you want to use to decorate the top of the cake.
I used strawberries and blueberries to make an American flag. I saw the flag cake top in a magazine. I don't know what they used for the cake itself, but I'm sure it would tasty.
If you want more cake, you can bake two cake mixes, place the strawberries and cream cheese between the two layers and place the cool whip on top of the second cake. You can also prepare on a platter if you don't want to keep it in the tin. I am usually getting ready to take the cake somewhere for a party or something, so I use a tin so that I don't have to worry about getting my dish back.
Enjoy! As far as I know, there is not a recipe out there like this one. I have been making it this way for years.

What was your inspiration?
I had to try and top my 2010 cake entry to the local fair. Since it was close to 9/11, I thought an American flag would be appropriate.
What are you most proud of?
I most proud to be able say that is the flag of my country and that I'm an American. I also won first place at the 2011 local fair for the "Think Outside the Box" category.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
this is the easiest cake to make. It may a little time consuming, but it is totally worth it in the end.
I have provided instructions on how I make it. I hope you try it for yourself and your family.
