I was able to buy an old, traditional "Trachten-Schirm". The frame of the umbrella is very fine and about 50 years old, the handle is of brass.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

let yourself be inspired by old photos and search for suitable crocheting patterns.

Thank you for your interrest, I purchased a pattern from Ira Rott (www.IraRott.com. To me, the pattern description was more confusing than help but the diagramm is very clear. I also had to try several yarns first since in Switzerland the mentioned brand is not available. So you better make some samples to reach the measurement. Have fun and good luck.

Hi Sharon. Try the fleemarket to find an old fabric only damaged parasol, take it apart and stretch the new part over it, or check www.ebay.com or www.ricardo.com I am furtunate to have found a umbrellar factory here in Switzerland that sells me custom made umbrellar frames and handles.

Thank you very much! That is so beautiful and so feminine. It would be gorgeous for a bride to carry as she rides in a carriage up to the church.
