Pansy Cake

Pattern Info

Pattern info for this project can be found here:
Cover from Wilton book 1997

Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Unisex

Style: Classic, Traditional, Romantic

Materials

Chocolate cake with raspberry filling. Bottom was 12" and top two layers were 8". Basketweave was made with buttercream chocolate frosting. Flowers and leaves were made with royal icing and hand painted with food coloring.

What was your inspiration?

This pansy cake was on the front of the Wilton book about 15 years ago. I always wanted to make it for my Mom and figured since she was celebrating her 80th birthday I should get to it! I have since learned better ways to paint and color flowers, as it took forever for the food coloring to dry.

What are you most proud of?

That it even resembled the picture of the cake in the book!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

The instructions said to use food coloring to paint the flowers. Today, there are many ways to paint flowers and I would recommend searching some 'how to' videos and instruction on how to do it.
