Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Children

Style: Funky, Whimsical, Eco-Friendly

Materials

cake base, frosted, covered in fondant; tusk rice krispie treats over shaped pipe, cover in frosting, then covered in fondant; gumpaste plants; gumpaste dragon fly; tar bubbles and drizzle made from black isomalt flavored with rootbeer

What was your inspiration?

This was 1 out of 7 centerpieces I created for my friend's son's Bar Mitzvah. He loves paleontology! Each centerpiece reflected a different vignette of prehistoric times or items: Dinosaur footprint; Amber (fosilized bugs in tree sap); Giant prehistoric dragonfly; Dinosaur nest with eggs; Prehistoric frog/lizard; Prehistoric nautilus; and a Mastodon stuck in a tar pit.

What are you most proud of?

I was very pleased at how even and shiny I was able to get the fondant tar.
