Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Children

Style: Funky, Whimsical, Geeky

Materials

Cake base carved, frosted, then covered with fondant. Gumpaste plants, jellybean rocks. With some airbrushing (the best new tool ever!)

What was your inspiration?

This was 1 out of 7 centerpieces I created for my friend's son's Bar Mitzvah. He loves paleontology! Each centerpiece reflected a different vignette of prehistoric times or items: Dinosaur footprint; Amber (fosilized bugs in tree sap); Giant prehistoric dragonfly; Dinosaur nest with eggs; Prehistoric frog/lizard; Prehistoric nautilus; and a Mastodon stuck in a tar pit.

What are you most proud of?

I love they way the carved cake came out. I just purchased an inexpensive air brush and it really made the carving pop.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I wish I had had more time to practice the gumpaste pieces.
