Paleontology - Amber embedded bugs

Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Children

Style: Geeky, Whimsical, Funky, Eco-Friendly

Materials

base/log is made from rice krispie treats, frosted and coated with melted chocolate to make it look like bark; amber is made from hard candy flavored with carmel and toffee with actual edible bugs (crickets, weaver ants and winged weaver ants) embedded in it; twigs are chocolate covered pretzel sticks and Chinese noodles; gum pasted plants (plus real fern leaves); battery operated candles to help highlight the bugs

What was your inspiration?

This was 1 out of 7 centerpieces I created for my friend's son's Bar Mitzvah. He loves paleontology! Each centerpiece reflected a different vignette of prehistoric times or items: Dinosaur footprint; Amber (fosilized bugs in tree sap); Giant prehistoric dragonfly; Dinosaur nest with eggs; Prehistoric frog/lizard; Prehistoric nautilus; and a Mastodon stuck in a tar pit.

Now that's daring! Very clever idea. Great job! I hope it was a huge hit.

It was very well received :-) I knew that the boys would want a piece of a bug ... but was a bit surprised when the girls joined and and several dads! It was fun.
