Owl Print Bombshell Dress

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Sew Retro: Perfect Fit Bombshell Dress »

Instructions

Instead of using the skirt pattern from the Craftsy course, I opted for a simple gathered skirt. I think it dresses it down somewhat, and makes it a little flirtier.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Cute, Romantic, Whimsical, Classic, Retro / Vintage

Materials

Printed cotton from Snoozer Loser (I won it in a Burdastyle.com giveaway!) and cotton voile for the gathered skirt.

What was your inspiration?

The Bombshell dress pattern is a great way to use up scraps of your have fabrics that you just can't bear to toss. I had some small pieces left of this printed cotton, which I adore. The pattern pieces are all small, so I was able to cut the bodice even though I had barely any fabric on hand. I wanted something simpler and less dressy on the bottom half to balance out the super-fitted sexiness of the top, so I made a simple gathered skirt. I love the way it worked out.

What are you most proud of?

The fit of the bodice, and the way the print really shines.

Hi, I absolutely love the pairing of fabric and that skirt! I'm new to craftsy and wanted to take this as my first course, but wasn't sure about the skirt for me. You've found the perfect solution! Would you mind Shari g how you made the skirt?

Sure! It's basically a gathered rectangle. I used a yard of 60-inch wide fabric and sewed it together at the selvedge edge. Then gather all along the top edge and stitch to the bodice. Super easy!

Well done! Very cute. Did you need to make many adjustments to the pattern?

I made a few adjustments: raised the neckline, adjusted for a swayback, and let out the front princess seams slightly because I'm not as skinny through the middle as I used to be.
