Owl coil basket

Wrapping handle
Continue stitching normally once wrapped
loop left unstitched for handle skeleton
Loops done & about to wrap with rope

Instructions

To make handles:
On the second last lap around your bowl/basket leave two handle shaped loops sticking up unstitched (see photo). Continue stitching normally for the last coil until you get back around to the first loop/handle. Fasten off thread as close to the loop as you can.
Wind your rope very tightly around and around the handle so that there are no gaps and you can't see the rope ...

What was your inspiration?

I just wanted to try a different shape. Plus I'm 100 % addicted to making these things!
I thought i'd cutsie it up by making a little stuffed owl to perch on the edge of the basket and hide my end point for me :)

What are you most proud of?

This is probably my favourite out of all the baskets I've made so far. It's the most unique.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I did a few straight stitches across the base of the basket so the bottom is a bit stronger and more rigid.
You can do a zig zag stitch along the wrapped rope before you wind it around the handles if you are worried about your material gapping or fraying (I did this the first time I did these handles on another project but didn't bother this time)

Hi Sarah! It looks like you've mastered the art of coiled baskets! I'm wondering if you've seen my book "Sewing Pottery by Machine". I was inspired by "It's a Wrap" by Susan Breier and I've taken the art to another place: enclosed forms resembling pottery. I hope you take a look at it! Keep up the good work! Barbara Warholic
