What was your inspiration?
I started making shoes about two years ago. I'd made a friend's wedding dress, and she waited until the week before the wedding to think about shoes. I told her I'd never made shoes before but would give it a shot. It turned out to be more fun (and more challenging!) than I thought.
What are you most proud of?
I am still tweaking my designs after 170 or so pairs. When I sell shoes I custom fit the pattern to a gazillion measurements. You can't buy shoes that fit so well. :) And if they don't fit - I alter them. That's the beauty of fabric shoes...
I sell my shoes on etsy- this is just one pair of about 50 listings up on www.uku2.etsy.com.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
There are a few patterns for shoes available out there but mostly they are for shoes that don't distinguish between right and left. Be prepared to tweak a pattern like that a great deal to get the look you want.
Oh, and leave 5/8" of ease lengthwise. I learned that one the hard way. ;)
I am working on getting patterns ready for sale - feel free to contact me if you might be interested? uku.clothing@gmail.com
