What was your inspiration?
My grandmother used to work at a store called Montgomery Ward when I was a little boy. One day, I searched eBay for items from the store, just because. I found this sheet and had to have it. It has since become a floor cushion and the inner layer of this scarf. I picked the yarn based on the colors in the print. So, in a sort of roundabout way, my grandmother sort of inspired this project.
What are you most proud of?
It's beautiful, but it is also meaningful. When I explain where this fabric came from to my mother, upon receipt of the gift on mother's day, she will probably cry. The knitting is sort of holding the memories of my grandma and my own needlework together in a piece that my mother can look at and think about us both. This is truly an heirloom.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Mohair is quite stubborn and messy to work with. It will get in your eyes (and mouth, and couch cushions). Use slick needles, addi turbo's were perfect. I started with bamboo needles and had to the stitches off of the needles because it had stuck horribly. This is a labor of love and takes a little bit of time. Be carful of twisting stitches and dropping them, the yarn is very fine.
