Following the steps for a log cabin block -- I changed the beginning square to an octogon then traded out the width of two of the fabrics from 2 1/2" wide to 5" wide. I used Print Shop shapes to print an octogon pattern piece. If you do an internet search for 'free log cabin quilt block pattern', you'll find lots of good ones to print out.
