Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2013 with Laura Nownes »

Instructions

It is important to use a scant quater-inch seam! :)

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Funky, Casual, Cute, Whimsical, Mod

Materials

I will be using the "Spot On" fabric kit for the Craftsy 2013 BOM... Plus some black and white polka dot fabrics from my stash.... I think I am going to substitute in black, white and grey for some of the colors included in the kit, but still lots of polka dots!

What was your inspiration?

The 2013 BOM class taught by Laura Nownes is a wonderful opportunity! I feel excited to finally take a class from her!

This block was fun to make. I happen to LOVE polka dots, so I am happy that the fabric kit was available from Craftsy. I also have a selection of spotty fabrics in my stash, (mostly black and white and red) that will finally be put to good use -- I was happy to be able to make extras of these blocks!

On Laura's website (blog?) she recently showed pictures of traditional log cabin quilts... I found this very helpful and inspiring! It made me want to create an extra set of these blocks, so I could "play" with them! I am now wishing I had even more! Lol! It was fun trying different arrangements... there are an amazing number of effects that can be created with just this one block!

What are you most proud of?

The 2012 BOM was my first time making a sampler quilt --(I finished all of the blocks, and will start quilting it soon) -- This year I feel much more confident about my piecing skills. I am happy to be back for the 2013 BOM with my Craftsy BOM friends!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

The instructor gives very detailed directions. Watch the video and follow along. Print out the course materials for the cutting dimensions. Have FUN!

Honestly, I was surprised that there is a bit of a 3-D effect... There is probably a formula that would be easy to follow with blocks like these... mine was just a happy accident. These blocks have many possibilities!

Very cute! I too love poka dots & am taking Laura's class.......she is using a dotted fabric too (I think) if I'm not getting it mixed up with the other class I'm taking ..... LOL. Anyway, this is very nice, can't wait to see your final quilt :)

Thank you! I ordered the kit that was available from Craftsy (I think it might be sold out, at the moment) and it is the same fabric that Laura Nownes is using. I am going to make a few changes, but I do love the ploka dots!

Di your blocks are such fun... the first one looks like 'attic windows' and the zigzag patterns is just so cute. Thanks for all the brilliant ideas and for getting me excited to get started:))))))))))))))

Polka dots give a bubbly , bouncey effect that probably reflects the persons personality. :-). The Log Cabin block was the first block I learned (through Quilt in A Day), and have made several quilts using it. It really is fun to experiment withe the variety of layouts! A traditional Log Cabin block has a center and 3 gradient fabrics on one side & 3 on the other. Holy polka dots! Great job!

LadyBev, I am beaming! I like thinking of these blocks as being "bubbly" -- makes me think of a glass of champagne! :) This block was fun to make! Thank you for your thoughtful comment! :)

Wow Di! You're already off to your creative start in taking the simple and making it spectacular! Now I'm looking forward to working with the polka dots even more (once my fabric arrives?). Once again you're an inspiration. Really like the two blocks offset together. They make the eye travel and look 3D.

Oh Jean, I am so excited to see you and my other favorites here doing the 2013 BOM! I can't wait to see what you come up with once your dots arrive! I loved your recent comment: "Let's polka in 2013" Lol! You are a dear!!

These are fun! Why do I think there are two dotted quilts in the works? It would be fun to do two quilts exchanging one color between them. A front & a back? Well, as usual, your design abilities get my mind working! lol!

Lol! Darns, I'd love to see what you could do with these in a quilt! I am realizing that this is an addictive hobby... so many fun ideas for quilts that could be made... I already have a stack of unfinished objects (UFO's) enough to keep me busy for the rest of this year! I must restrain myself!!

Thanks, Omentide-- the 3-D effect was accidental. I only noticed it in the small photo, and I'm not even sure how one would go about re-creating it... I think, perhaps it has something to do with the grey fabric that the blocks are auditioning on top of... ? At some point I want to learn about the "floating" effect. Thanks for the comment!
