OK folks - time for confession. I received a free pattern during a Shop Hop and mentally filed it away until I came across some gorgeous fabric from a new site that Amy (2012 BOM) recommended checking out. It was perfect for the project and off went my order. Turns out its a 9 inch PP block & I have to make 12 of them. They're simple string blocks but I'll need the precision of PP to get the corners to match up. Soooooo - here I go for my 2nd try. This time around I'm taking Carol Doak's Mastering Paper Piecing class here on Craftsy and I've joined her 8,500+ member yahoo group. Already getting encouraged to do better this time around :D

I am sorry to hear that you do not lie paper piecing. I really do like the way points come out. Even if you had problems, these turned out beautifully.

Thanks J.A.C! I have always enjoyed the results. These two blocks are favorites. And now that some time has gone by and I've gained more skills I'm actually thinking of trying paper piecing again. Perhaps with the help of Craftsy's new class.... I got a freebie pattern during a Shop Hop and fell in love with some fabric. Yep, its paper piecing :D May be worth the effort.

Hey Martha- Well, these pretty much kicked me around the block. Much like the hexis I didn't enjoy the process at all - but I'm very happy with the results. I can't see myself doing paper piecing again. Thanks much!

Aw - c'mon Jean - you know you LOVE paper piecing! You must - you made such a good job of these you must be feeling really proud of yourself! The first ones are bound to the the hardest (I hope!!!)

Sorry Pat - Let's see, why? Dulled my needles. Couldn't cut fabric to cover a section without wasting a LOT of it. Sewed sections backwards anyway. Rip, rip, rip - paper tears - print again and start over. Perforated paper kept falling apart. Sew through tape? Yikes! Oops, by habit I pick up my always kept handy good "fabric only" scissors and CUT PAPER! Argh! Well... I recall reaching a point where I simply wadded up a whole segment and threw it in the trash can. This ISN"T any fun! At least not for me. If it weren't for my perfectionism and determination to at least try all the blocks I'd have quit by then. But I kept at it and finally got through it. I didn't care for the hexis either. The only real enjoyment is the finished product. I'm proud of the results, especially the fussy cut center, and I learned a lot, but man these were a chore. :D

Wow, gorgeous and you're doing two sets. I may do another, I've promised this one and may want one for myself. I love your fabrics.

Thanks Candace. Glad you like them. I entered BOM as a real newbie and the 1st thing I learned is I didn't buy enough fabric. I started the B,W,R when we did string blocks because I have a lot of scraps. Long story short my 1st colorway is going to be a lap quilt. I'll have some leftover blocks but haven't decided where/how to use them. DO make yourself your own quilt! Be sure to buy enough fabric up front :D. I'm sure it will be something you cherish.

PS: Yeah! I'm not doing 2 more paper pieced blocks for my 1st colorway - nor 2 more curved pieced blocks which are also proving to be quite a challenge!

Beautiful Jean - I also had trouble with paper piecing and would strongly recommend using the correct paper for paper piecing as I have just picked my machine up from the shop after using the printer paper - not a good idea.

Oct 26, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Oh no Beth! There's nothing worse than having to take your machine into the shop. Mine is now making noise I've heard before so I thoroughly cleaned it after finishing paper piecing. Sept is up next so we'll see.

BTW- What is the "correct" paper. Just like to know. At the moment I don't expect to ever paper piece again but who knows....

HI Jean, don't know the correct title of the paper but I believe you get if from quilting supply stores. I had totally oiled and cleaned my machine after doing this but it persisted with a weird noise so took it into the shop - fortunately I haven't done any damage but will be talking to my patchwork store if I ever feel inclined to do paper piecing again.

Well Beth- After a good cleaning and some more sewing my machine was making noise too. So I've taken it apart , cleaned and adjusted again. Sounds better now. I REALLY hope I don't end up in the shop!

Hi Jean, I too hope you don't end up in the shop. I will be certainly talking to my local patchwork store as to the correct paper to use if I ever decide to do this again - I am not going to risk damage to my machine by using printer paper - even though I did all the lines with a sewers wheel not with the needle of my machine. I do hope others haven't had our problems with paper piecing.

Jean - you lost me in following? Do you think it's a conspiracy because of my gripping about the "heart"? I have read others have "lost" pictures and such. This is the world of blogs and computers et al. The important thing is you found me again, thankfully. Glad you got to see my whack project. Glad you like it. Hugs

PS: As for conspiracy - I'm not taking any chances by mentioning hearts anymore. No really, I'm sure these glitches are part of getting a new (barely a year old) popular site working properly. :D
