Novelty Weaved Scarf

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Rigid Heddle Weaving »

Difficulty:

Category: Weaving

Type of item: Accessory

For: Girls

Style: Funky, Cute, Whimsical

Materials

Novelty fibers, embroidery floss

What was your inspiration?

I have a very large collection of fun novelty fibers and thought it would be loads of fun to try them out on a weaved scarf. I use the novelty fibers for the warp and embroidery floss for the weft. I wanted something light weight and really wanted to show off all the pretty fibers.

What are you most proud of?

It turned out so much prettier than I though!! I might make another one with blues and greens!! I have sooooooo much fiber! I could make about 10 more of these! I'm so glad I made a small dent in my stash and have something so pretty to show for it!

I'm almost ready to try this. When you say you split the floss into 2 pieces do you mean, two strands? thanks.

So beautiful. I was planning on making my 3rd project using my novelty yarns as the weft but now it'll be the warp. Did you use one color embroidery floss throughout?

This scarf is the reason I finally bought a loom instead of just dreaming about it. I hope that one day I can make something as beautiful.

Where do I find the instructions for this scarf/shawl? I am planning to create the same type of scarf and would like to read these instructions. What dent reed was used. How wide was this scarf, etc.

This was something I improvised myself and there are no formal instructions for it. I used a 10 dent and it's about 12 inches wide. I used novelty fibers for the warp and embroidery floss for the weft and just had fun with it. I plan on making another soon and will take pictures of everything and write down my whole procedure so that everyone can see it.

In reading below, how did you use the bamboo skewer?

This is absolutely beautiful!! I haven't received my loom yet, but can't hardly stand it. I am so ready to start learning how to weave, it just looks like so much fun. Interestingly enough, I actually had thought about embroidery floss and wondered if it would work. Guess it does. And yes if you make another, please post pictures. Thank you for this lovely inspiration!!!

Sorry about the double posting! I have that yarn and a ton of embroidery yarn since I do counted cross-stitch! My fingers are itching now! All I have to do is take this class so I can do it! :-)

How did you leave a lot of space between the fibers to make it light and airy? Did you skip spaces when warping your loom??

I thought about skipping spaces with a size 12 dent but decided on the 10 and there was plenty of space between the fibers. I used a bamboo skewer to keep the spacing between the weft fibers even. It really made a difference in how light the finished fabric is. It's light as air.

This is beautiful! what dent was your heddle? If you make another one, please take a picture of the warp and post it. I would like to see this one a loom. I am having a hard time picturing the fun yarn as the warp and the weft being embroidery floss. How much of that did you use?

I used a size 10 dpi dent. I used quite a lot of floss but there's a lot of space between the fibers to make it lighter and airy. I also split the floss into 2 pieces per. I used about 1.5 oz of floss total and about 1 oz of novelty yarn total. The next time I make one I'll make sure to take more pics while I'm weaving it and post them so you can see!
