The set of cardigans, hats and mittens were knit from 3ply handspun Blue Face Leicester yarn. The white, tan and brown are natural colors. The black is commercially dyed and the red is dyed with Kool Aid.
What was your inspiration?
I designed these sweaters, hats and mittens for the "All New Homespun, Handknit" book. I am from a Norwegian heritage and have always loved the Scandinavian style. I wanted to create a simple design for children but retain the Nordic flavor.
What are you most proud of?
The sweaters have wide hems that cover any floats from the design work. When my children were small I really disliked floats on the inside of sweaters. Their little fingers would often catch on the inside of the sleeves so I made these to be totally covered. The sweaters look like a lot of work but really knit up pretty fast.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
The sweaters look harder than they are and knit up fast. The design is pretty simple and straight forward and they don't have to be knit out of handspun. Most DK weight yarns substitute well in the pattern and I think the book is available in electronic form now.
