Type of item: Clothing

For: Children

Style: Classic, Cute

Materials

Bernat Softee Baby, G Hook 4mm

What was your inspiration?

Quick & easy charity project

What are you most proud of?

Making gifts for newborns at the local hospital. Delivered 59 caps, including some Divine Caps in separate listing.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Start with a flat circle crown, then choose a stitch that you like for the sides. I used a shell pattern of *sc, skip 1, 3 dc, skip 1, repeat from*. Each shell's dc is in the sc of the previous shell row and the sc is in the center dc of the previous row.

You can use whatever method you prefer to start a circle, A magic ring, chain 4 and make 11 dc in first chain, or chain 4-6 and join to 1st ch to form a loop. :-)

I make approx 225 baby hats from x-s preemie to full term newborn for the delivery rooms for the hospitals that service our babies, including Toronto Sick Kids. these donated hats are cuter on the babies than the woven 'stocking' that is used to cover your arm before they put on the cast materials.

It is nearly all double crochet, first in the round, then shells of 3 dc with a sc between. Might take one for practice, but you should be OK as soon as you learn to recognize the stitches and where the next one goes. Good Luck! Jeanie

I love this hat and plan on using this pattern to make hats for our hospital maternity ward. Can you tell me how many stitches on row 4 would be needed for a preemie size and how many for a larger size hat. I would like to use the pattern for chemo hats for children and adults would that be possible? What modifications would I need to make? Thank you for any help you can give. Grandma Cathy

I have not tried other sizes than listed in the instructions, but the nice thing about making for charity is they can use all sizes. After you make one you can vary the yarn and/or hook size to make a larger or smaller version. Also by varying the amount of shells by increasing or decreasing row 4 by multiples of 4. They are quite quick to make, just experiment to find the combinations that you like :-)

I purchased your newborn baby caps pattern. I am having a hard time following your instructions. I am confused about the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rows at the beginning. Once I have completed the first 12 dc and go to row 2, how many dc in each sc? If I follow your instructions one dc in sc, then 2 dc in next sc and so forth, I will only add 6 additional dc for row 2. You instruct to increase row 2 and 3 by 12 dc. I am confused. How about row 4 then. Please reply because I would love to make one and give it to a girl who has no family in town. She will be a single mom. thanks.

Row 1: =12 dc. Row 2: 2dc in each dc of row 1 for 12 increases =24 dc. Row 3: *2 dc, 1 dc in next* around =36 dc. Row 4 increase 10 to get to 46. The amount of stitches in rows 2 & 3 does not need to be exact, just be sure to increase row 4 by the amount to get to 46 dc. Please let me know if you have more questions. :-)

JeanieK on craftsy.com
Jan 30, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Any soft acrylic type yarn works well for babies. The weight that I use is Standard Weight 3, known as Light Worsted or DK. It is finer than regular Worsted. Any yarn you like is fine, just adjust the hook size or amount of stitches to get the hat size you want. :-)

Have not thought about selling caps and I'm betting that you can crochet some for her. I was working on hats for a preemie and guess my cold has gone to my head so I'm having issues understanding. Looking at the photo it appears there are 4 rows for the crown. The instructions only specify 3 assuming the 12 dc in the ring are the first row. What am I missing? You may email me at martiehawkins at gmail.com. Thanks!

The variegated hats are the same dc crown, and continued with dc rows instead of switching to shells, and ending with a simple shell border. Working in the back loop only of some or all of the rows gives the definition to the rows. Once the crown is the size that you want, you can use any stitch you like for the sides. The nice thing about making them for charity is that you're not trying to fit a specific baby and after the first one you can change the stitch count to make some larger and smaller.

here is a question if you want us to increase row 2 and row 3 by 12 stitches each on row 3 wouldn't you increase everyother stitch instead of every 3rd stitch
JeanieK on craftsy.com
Dec 08, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
You are correct! It should read Row 2, increase 12 by working 2 dc in each stitch of row 1. Row 3 increase 12 by working 2 dc in every other stitch of row 2. Thanks for catching that! Take a look at http://www.crochetspot.com/how-to-crochet-a-circle/

You could vary the size by using thicker yarn & larger hook. Could also add more shells by increasing the dc crown by multiples of 4. The nice thing about making caps for charity is that all sizes are needed, and after the first one you can decide if you want to increase or decrease for another size. :-)

JeanieK on craftsy.com
Oct 17, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
The shells need a multiple of 42 +or- 4, so if you increase row 3 of the dc base to 38dc and then start the shells it would have one less shell around and come out smaller. :-)

JeanieK on craftsy.com

Long reply, hope it makes sense. First row is about 12 double crochet in a slip loop, join with a sl st and ch 2. Second row continue around with 2 dc in each st of previous row, third row dc in every 2nd st, fourth row dc in every 3rd st, continue rounds with one more stitch between increases, adjusting as needed to keep it fairly flat. An internet search on "how to crochet a circle" should get you going . . .
