Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Difficulty:

Category: Other

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Retro / Vintage, Cute

Materials

Cotton fabric, fusible batting, staples for staple gun, hot glue, decorative tacks

What was your inspiration?

I had seen a bunch of reupholstered furniture that used lots of different fabrics put together in a patchwork sort of way. I wasn't confident enough to do crazy shapes, but I could do squares!

What are you most proud of?

The whole thing, really. I'm proud of having the bravery to tackle an actual reupholstering projects and have it turn out so adorable.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Don't be intimidated, it's not as hard as you think. Time consuming, yes, but completely worth it in the end. Don't short-cut anything, take your time and think it out.

I want! I should do this too! What fabric did you use? Was it upholstery or did you use scraps?

The fabrics are just quilting cotton, but after I sewed all the squares together I used fusible batting to give it more substance. It's been almost exactly a year since I did this project, and the seams are holding up great!

Please forgive my ignorance, but where are the directions for this project? I have a comfy office chair that looks old & tatty, and would love to do something like this. I also have some quilt blocks in my "ufo" stash that would probably be the bees knees! Help me find the instructions.

There aren't any! However, if you carefully use a seam ripper on your old chair you can remove the upholstry and use it for a pattern.

I outlined the process on my blog, http://www.bclef.com, but there wasn't a pattern or any directions. It really was a "fly by the seat of my pants" project. But check out my blog and it'll show you how I went about it. :)

How Great!!! I think I can even use one of my UFO's as the fabric cover that is large enough. I am stuck on a scrappy quilt and it has been stuck in my UFO pile... I think this will be a great fit! Thanks for sharing your great piece!

Fab! I agree, you don't always need a pattern....just think it through, take your time and be proud of your work. It must put a smile on your face every time you see and use it.

Oh, thank you! That makes me feel so good. Just be sure to look for a chair that isn't too fussy. This one was pretty easty. I pretty much just sewed squares together and used the old pieces as a template to cut out the shape. Heavy staple gun, decorative tacks, and voil!

Do you give pattern?
tlemaire on craftsy.com
Nov 03, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
The pattern you would use for the chair pieces would come from taking the old fabric off of the chair and using that as the pattern. Your chair would have a completely different pattern than hers unless you had the EXACT same chair.

I think one could 'piece' those upholstery 'sample' pieces into interesting patterns for your quilted upholstery. It would also be a very good way to utilize those odd pieces of expensive fabric.

Thank you, Stefanie! I'm so flattered you saw and commented. :D Using a pre-made quilt isn't a bad idea, actually. I'll have to keep that in mind for the future! Piecing the square together wasn't that time consuming, but it would be cool to find a thrifted more complicated quilt to reupholster a chair. Great idea!!
