Necktie Full Bed Quilt

Instructions

This project was a lot of trial & error...just give it a whirl!

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Traditional, Retro / Vintage

Materials

Collected necties, fabric, batting.

What was your inspiration?

A woman had been saving her husbands ties. This collection began in 1937, and included almost 50 ties. She selected the background color and border, and we worked together to select the ties. Her husband was quite dashing!

What are you most proud of?

She was thrilled with the result. When I dropped it off at her house, she couldn't take her eyes off of it! Those ties held so many wonderful memories for her, it was an honor to be trusted with her collection. Now she has it displayed in her home and she shares her memories with everyone who sees it!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This project required a lot of hand basting and stitching. The layout was completely trial and error. The colors, shapes & textures of these ties were so varied that putting them together in a cohesive way was challenging. It was very much like piecing a puzzle.

I didn't prewash the neckties. They came to me clean and pressed. I would probably spot clean if they needed it. I used a cotton quilting fabric for the background...the client wanted it to look like a man's shirt fabric.

Did you prewash to neckties? What type of material did you use as your background fabric?

This is beautiful, Since my husband has retired and no longer needs so many ties, I was looking for a pattern to do a quilt using his ties. This is perfect. Thank you .

Just start laying them out! The hardest part was cutting them...but we realized that in order for them to lay properly we had to get them to a uniform size. Choose your favorites...or the widest...and start with N,S,E & W compass points, then start to fill in!
