What was your inspiration?
I am inspired by my client Lois, a world traveler who loves purses with hidden compartments. This is the 2nd purse I've designed for her with hidden compartments--just big enough to store a credit card or folded money quickly.
What are you most proud of?
The decorative cabochon (cinnamon bunn) out of navy microsuede and cotton rope, preparing it like piping, and then winding it around and sewing as it grew bigger. I put a backing of navy microsuede on the finished cabochon, and handstitched it to a microsuede pocket for the front flap closure of the purse. I left an opening two fingers big at the top of the cabochon to hide a credit card or folded money. The cabochon is a roomy 4 x 4 circle inside.
Then, I put a second hidden compartment inside the purse along the side seam and towards the bottom of the purse. A decorative silver spider marks the location of the compartment.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Next time you make a purse or shopping tote, take some extra time to build-in a secret compartment. I'd like to see/hear about your ideas.
