Materials

2 charm packs, about a half of a jelly rolll, and Batik fabric; 100% cotton batting, I used Moda Chrysalis by Sanae.

What was your inspiration?

This quilt was made from the first charm packs and jelly roll that I had ever bought. They sat around looking cute for a long time before I finally found the Quilting Quickly course and knew what to do with them!

What are you most proud of?

The pieced border - it was fun to do! I didn't try to make it end up even by taking in a seam or two - I just trimmed it and it's not noticeable (to me).

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

If you're a beginner - alternate light and dark when laying out your charm squares - take a picture to see the effect and to see if too many colors are in one location; sew with a precise 1/4 inch seam; press to the dark. If you don't want to trim the last piece of your piano key border, measure how much more or less you need to take in or let out and adjust a few seams. The quilting is just simple diagonal lines made with a walking foot. I mark my lines with a hera, but you could probably just eyeball it since the blocks are so small.

Thanks for the tips on making the border. Well done and the colors are great together. I'm a beginner and all these examples are great to see and have personal comments from the quilters.

What is a hera?? (You said you use it for marking your lines for quilting.)

It's a plastic (or wooden) tool that makes a crease in the fabric. So you would use it like a pencil, with a ruler. It makes just enough of an impression so that you can sew a straight line without having to use quilting pens. I mark mine after making the quilt sandwich. http://www.ehow.com/video_4433316_use-hera.html
