Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this cake: My sister is a great traveller so that was the theme for the cake. I found a vintage alligator suitcase photo on line and used that as inspiration, along with several techniques I learned from the fabulous Designer Handbag class taught by Elisa Strauss. Even though I did not do a handbag there were so many helpful things I learnt from the class and I did use the baggage tag demonstrated by Elisa which made a great addition to my cake. I also had some vintage luggage labels printed onto a sugar sheet.

What are you most proud of? I had to carry this cake in two pieces on a plane to take it to where my sister lives! I then finished it off with the detailed sugar paste pieces I took with me. I was v. pleased it all arrived unbroken!

What advice would you give someone starting this project? It took a bit of planning for this cake and I made several extra gum paste spare locks, flowers and so on. Didn't need, but a good precaution especially if you need to transport the cake some distance as I did!

Gorgeous! I just discovered you and all of your beautiful cakes. Did the airline let you take both boxes on the plane without any difficulty? Any special packing advice? I get nervous traveling for just an hour by bus with a cake :)

Thanks delronda! Have just replied to your other posting. Didn't realise the blue cake would get put into my projects again - I thought I was entering a little "favourites" competition! Never mind. The airline was great. The box with 2 cakes weighed well over hand carry allowance so they asked what was inside. When I said a 70th birthday cake for my sister they waived me through with big smiles! The hostess on board was wonderful and found a place behind last row of seats to put box flat on floor then helped me get it off plane on arrival. I got a box which was big enough to hold two cakes side by side and put in lots of packing. The locks, handles etc I packed separately, also with lots of kitchen paper around. Nothing broke, so was lucky!
