I had an enjoyable time building this one! Thanks, Demented!

After seeing a negative comment on RipStitcher's blog this morning I checked out the Sew Together bag again. Ladies, did Sew Demented "steal or copy" zippered pockets in an expandable bag from anyone? Because they are not unique to that bag. They, along with the zipper in the handle are the only similarities as far as I can see. (And I doubt the zippered handle has never been done before,) the Sew Together bag is cute but I had previously passed on others like it, maybe even it, too. They just didn't offer an option to what I already had. I did jump on the Bionic Gear Bag - precisely because of the fold-down, sit flat, usable front. That feature does not exist on the Sew Together bag. Evidently, RipStitcher's greatest sin was purchasing, fabricating, reviewing, and recommending the Sew Together bag to others even though she still wanted a larger, differently designed bag to fit her needs. (Please see next post)

Then RipStitcher had the temerity to produce a pattern and market her new bag, The Bionic Gear Bag. I love it and can't wait to finish mine because it truly is a unique design that should fit my needs. Both bags have something to appeal to different, or the same, people in different ways. I find the attacks on RipStitcher to be most distasteful. Perhaps you have spoken too quickly in defense of a friend. But this all sounds like catty, insecure, middle school girls. I guess the market will play out in its own good time. In the meantime, you might want to hold your tongues as your comments reflect poorly on you, not RipStitcher.

Maybe her pictures don't show it, but the Sew Together Bag does fold down flat if you unzip it the whole way. Mine sits flat & open on my sewing table at all times. I just think it's a bit too similar in design & construction. I guess time will tell. Slightly tweaking a few things here and there doesn't make it unique and original.

Mango Hands, I understand what you are saying. I just finished looking at the 45 finished projects on the Sew Together pattern page. All of the bags are attractive. But only 2, maybe 3, showed the front and back down flat. What, for me, was an important design element wasn't even pictured in the vast majority, including those that showed a bag from every conceivable angle. Bottom line for me: yes there are some similarities, zippered pockets, zippered handle, front and the possibility of laying either the front or front and back down. Was the Bionic Gear Bag inspired by the Sew Together Bag? I'd give that a good chance. Is it the same bag? No, I don't believe so. The Bionic Gear Bag (BGB) appears to be significantly larger. The the front and back of the Sew Together (STB) laid flat are a much smaller area and have no "lip" to corral those many things scattered around my work area. On the BGB, only the front lays flat, with more space and the aforementioned lip. (next post)

And the attachable clip "dish" is a good touch. I have not made or have the pattern for the STB. I have the pattern for the BGB and plan to start work on it tomorrow. The former is a cute bag and obviously suits many people. Congratulations on every front to Sew Demented for a successful project. While the BGB may well have been inspired by the STB, I still feel there are enough differences to view it as a new pattern. One better suited to my personal style. I just hate to see anyone attacked unfairly for their hard work. We may have to "agree to disagree" but thank you for your measured response. Judy

Just had to chime in here, I couldn't help myself. Ripsticher has done nothing wrong. IMO she hasn't done anything that hasn't been done over and over and over by professionals all over the world. If she had, then we wouldn't have books such as: Stich by Stich by Debbie Moebus, Sew what Skirts by Francesca DenHartog, Skirt a Day Sewing by Nicole Smith. They are all selling and making the exact same thing, a skirt. There is no ONE patent on a skirt. These women took an item, changed it up and made a new pattern. Same thing Kenneth D. King is doing with his Jean-ius class. Are you telling me that because Levi make jeans that nobody else can make jeans? And besides, this pattern by Sew Demented was done before, I've seen it as a free tutorial a long time ago, so which one came first?? To even imply that Rip Sticher stole someone's pattern is laughable. Ignore them Rip Stitcher, your pattern is great!! and its YOURS!!

I'm with you on this one, Paula22! Kudos for the new ideas from RipStitcher! It's fine to take an idea or concept and make it better. If that didn't happen, what would we be driving and what would your appliances look like? This is as ridiculous as Apple suing all other cell phone manufacturers for making theirs "Rectangular with rounded corners"!

Love the fabrics; still like your Bionic Gear Bag much better! More room; better features and the tutorial is great! Thank you for encouraging us to make these for gifts and selling! So many designers try to limit this; silly them!
