What materials did you use? We moved in our new place in 2007 and it was nothing but a hill with grass and a maple tree so I had a blank canvas. Lots of rocks, flagstone, railroad ties, latice and a rented Bobcat to move the dirt. When the strand of white lights are on in the tree it gives such a romantic feel.

What are you most proud of? The fact that we did all the work ourselves. I learned how to work on sprinklers, and operate a Bobcat tractor. In addition to my landscape design knowledge I love creating ideas not only in my own yard, but others who ask for help.

What advice would you give someone starting this project? Sit down in your yard and dream of what you want it to be, then draw it out on paper. If you can't draw then just list it out. Drive around neighborhoods nearby and see what grows in your area to know what will make it through the seasons. Plan out how much work you want your yard to be so you can choose easy care or high maintenance according to your lifestyle. Talk to your local garden center people and pick their brains about plants, trees and shrubs for hardiness and size. Budget money for hardscapes and plants. Go to the library and check out books to read up on the different designs and layouts. I do this during the winter. Don't be afraid to make a mistake. If you plant something in one corner one year and it dies or you just don't like it there, move it or replace it. There are no hard, fast rules when it comes to making your yard your own retreat.

Love it! Looks so peaceful. I want to sit back in the shade and enjoy a cup of coffee and a book. Thanks for sharing!
