What was your inspiration?
I came across this pattern on Ravelry and although the original is made with a heavier yarn, the style looks perfect for my upcoming wedding. I'm getting married outside in Ohio in September. The weather is very unpredictable. My dress is strapless and I thought what better way to be prepared for possible cold weather than to knit myself something to go with the dress.
What are you most proud of?
I'm really happy with how this turned out; particularly since the yarn I chose is so different than what's in the pattern. I found that I did pretty good with the gauge using smaller needles. I had not yet made something with sleeves nor have I modified a pattern from its original form. I'm really impressed that it fits me like a glove! It was a great challenge to overcome!
Update: My wedding day was 93 and sunny, but I wore the shrug anyway. I had to wear it at least for the ceremony since I made it! I had to take it off for the reception.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Definitely knit a gauge swatch to be sure it's going to fit. This pattern is written rather ambiguously so that it can be easily modified. I will probably have more advice when this is finished. I skipped the border. You can add a border around the edges. I think that would just compete with my wedding dress so I'm leaving it plain. I think it works because the yarn is fluffy and fancy looking. There's some versatility to this pattern so you can really use your imagination with it.
