What was your inspiration?
I really wanted to do something special for my parents 25th anniversary. They have been a wonderful example to my siblings and me. We decided on a luncheon with a replication of their cake as the center piece. My sister made the topper, I borrowed a set of pillars and dedicated a day to the making of their cake.
What are you most proud of?
I was very pleased with Joshua's butter cream recipe in the Modern Butter Cream video. It is the first homemade recipe I've found that I like better then a mix or store bought icing. I replaced a tiny bit of the vanilla extract with almond extract to give it a unique flavor. Everyone commented that not only did it look nice but tasted good as well!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Make sure the cake is cool before starting on the icing and decorating. I baked it the night before. Give yourself plenty of time too. The less stressed you are the easier it will be to deal with any unexpected problems. I usually practice my decorations on a spatula to see how the icing flows and holds up.
