Quilting: My first quilt.
2 kudoz

My first quilt.

Pattern Info

Pattern info for this project can be found here:
Rail Fence

Instructions

My first quilt I made, using a rotary cutter and strip piecing.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Children

Style: Traditional, Classic

Materials

Cotton fabric and batting.

What was your inspiration?

My sister, what helped me buy supplies and assured me that I could do it. I made this in 1993 (I believe) after a visit with my sister and seeing all the quilts she had done.

What are you most proud of?

That I choose to do such a big quilt (twin size) as my first project and that I hand quilted it.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Watch that you don't stretch the fabric when sewing the strips together. This can be amended if it happens by cutting a few blocks and then squaring the edges up before cutting more.

very nicely done.. this is close to the one I am working on right now.. they call it basket weaving.. just one extra row on each side of the block.. so there are 5 strips in each block.. It's great that you hand quilt, I do to.. that is all that i do.. so that is one reason that my quilts take forever.. lol

This was for my daughter when she was about 5. My sister taught me how to quilt. If you know how to do a running stitch that is basically it (and I knew how to do that from when I was little girl and wanted to make my Barbie's clothes and my mom would not let me use her machine. I don't hand quilt much these days as it is very time consuming. My sister opened my eyes to the world of quilting from books and magazines. Our mom made quilts (but just basic one patch charm quilts from scraps for us to use-which she just tied). Our grandmother is the one who really quilts and I thought it was a skill that needed to be handed down, I didn't know you could learn it on your own from books and stuff.

P.S. So thrilled to see something hand quilted, I can't tell you how happy that makes me. It's so rare these days.
