Quilting: My first quilt
32 kudoz

My first quilt

Pattern Info

This project was designed by MoMoo.
Info can be found at:

My first baby quilt

Instructions

Don't worry about being perfect - these are handmade and perfectly acceptable to be unique.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Accessory

For: Children

Style: Traditional, Cute

Materials

Cotton charm pack, cotton backing and some off white material I picked up in a remnants basket. The binding is store bough bias binding

What was your inspiration?

A lot of my friends are pregnant at the moment so i decided to use my very recently learnt sewing skills and make them blankets.

What are you most proud of?

The whole thing - the squares are pretty much straight. Some not entirely and there is one areas where I accidently used red stitching on the white section but I think it adds to the charm!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Use cheap material and so a test run. Charm packs are not cheap and this can be an expensive hobby if you make mistakes.

I like it. I have only made 4 quilts. Im more into lap quilts. A very picky friend of mine is teaching me. One really good tip is to put 3 or 4 layers of masking tape where your 1/4 seam will be. this gives you nice straight lines. good luck. Keri

I agree about perfection--that comes with practice. Never heard of any one being too cold because a couple of seams didn't line up.

try using jeans or fabric from clothes for your first. try a lap quilt for a starter. Also try taping with masking tape, sandwiching the 3 fabrics/filler to the floor, wood or vinyl.

I have made 2 Queen size quilts so far and no matter what size they are, they are alot of hard work. Only the one making the quilt would notice any imperfections. Be very proud of your hard work and the finished product. Have fun doing what you enjoy.

Your first quilt is such a huge undertaking. Looking at the finished product is so satisfying. You should be very proud of this quilt and all your hard work.

Great Job! But watch out quilting is addictive and causes other addictions too like stashing fabric, staying up late to sew "one last seam", needing all the latest quilting gadets..........just to name a few!

I have learned to make my own charm packs. When I am sitting just relaxing or watching tv, I cut squares from remnants with sissors. When my basket is full, I take them to my sewing room and and line them up to size and recut them. I was amazed when I realized just how much money I was saving and how great my packs looked. I sort them by color and size.

I find something I like in every quilt I see. I am in the process of finishing my first "give away" quilt" to my oldest son for Christmas and have already started on my second "give away quilt" for my second son! I never imagined I would ever be quilting!

Way to go. My first quilts were made with some pre packaged squares from Wal-Mart. I didn't know to make quarter in. seams or to square them up, so they weren't perfect fit, but I was pretty proud of accomplishment. Keep up the good work.

That is a great first quilt. I have been quilting for almost four years and I can finally see my progress. I find that clipping or taping all three layers securely to the table and using lots of safety pins to baste the layers really helps to improve the finished product

I was taught in a quilting class to use safety pins about 3-4" apart to pin the layers together and then remove them as you machine quilt the project.

I use the floor, vinyle or wood floor and masking tape then lots of safety pins. Some people like the baste by hand. I never learned that way and prefer pins.

Thank you all so very much for your lovely comments. I opened up my email to about 100 notifications from Craftsy and got quite a surprise. To respond to a few comments. I now completely agree about 100% cotton only. These are made to last so use good quality materials only. I recently bought a cutting mat and rotary cutter so making my own binding is the next big challenge. I've now made 5, have one top made and 2 more pregnant friends so it's my aim to have them all done by Christmas. Thanks again all. MoMoo

only GOD is perfect..So join the rest of the world and appreciate the thought that goes with every little bit of love and time that goes into a homemade gift. I been quilting for around 40 years and still like the 'simple' designs. But even simple designs can look stunning according to the colors choosen and the way they are put together. ENJOY the addiction. lol

It can be expensive, however you can find lots of good cotton at JoAnns and Wal-Mart that are not too expensive. You are off to a good start and babies don't care where you buy your fabric or how much you paid for it - but they do understand the love. Keep on with your quilting and remeber like everything else in life it takes practice.

Awesome quilt. I was told when I first started that if there are no mistakes then it's not considered a real quilt!! Making these gifts is giving a piece of your heart and how wonderful is that!!! There are some things money just can not buy!! My first quilt was a turning 20 again, using 12 fat qrts. for a lap quilt.
