This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
The Couture Dress »

Instructions

The silk organza absolutely makes this dress. It's not optional. I'll be buying the stuff by the bolt. LOVE it!

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Classic

Materials

The fashion fabric is a poly/rayon/lycra blend in a subtle black and white herringbone pattern. I purchased it on sale at 50% off at Hancock Fabrics. I had to order the silk organza online because I could not find it locally. The lining was purchased at JoAnns (also at 50% off.

What was your inspiration?

I was receiving an award at a dinner and wanted to have a classy dress to wear to the event.

What are you most proud of?

I finished this dress in exactly one week. Granted I did nothing else for that week. Not even the dishes. I told my husband I was going to couture land.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I can not recommend this class enough. Susan is a fabulous instructor. Even though this course was more about the construction than it was about fitting she gave enough information for me to accomplish my goal of having a dress that fits my ...um....er..."mature" body (meaning I am stocky with no waist). She also gave me enough information to feel confident morphing my sleeves to be 3/4 length with an elbow dart. I now am infatuated with silk organza. I never even knew what that was before this class. A HUGE thanks to Susan for sharing her vast knowledge (she gave so much more information than was required) and also thanks to the Craftsy team for all that you do.

You look positively chic - and so elegant in this fabulous creation of yours. I know wearing it must make you feel like a million bucks, and you deserve it! I can't wait to see your next couture creation.

Just interjecting to let everyone know that Susan has an article in the March 2013 issue of Threads magazine. It teaches couture techniques for skirt waistbands. :-)

I particularly like your 3/4 sleeves. Somehow they help balance the shape for our body type. Such a nice job!

That must be why I love 3/4 sleeves. I thought it was because they keep my arms warm without dragging in the dish water. :-)

Thank you so much for your honesty. I have a "thick waist and I was afraid that the dress would not be attractive on me but now I have hope. :) Your fitting is excellent. I too, am becoming intrigued with silk organza. I am taking Susan's class but haven't cut out the muslin yet. You look beautiful in that dress.

That's the beauty of sewing your own clothing. You can make sure they fit. I had to morph 2 sizes together to get a proper fit. My first muslin was all size 16. the bottom half fit nicely but the waist on up was too tight and made my back have bulges. I went up to an 18 for the waist and bust. BIG improvement. Going up a size actually made me look slimmer.

What a lovely dress! I see you left the back section lower -- were the sleeves pulling down too much or did you feel comfortable wearing it?

I did raise the back 2.25".....but not as far as Susan did. I did not watch the entire course first, but watched each section as I went along. She had mentioned raising the back but did not say how far. I had my husband mark the desired height during a fitting. Only much later in the course did I discover that Susan had raised her version nearly to the shoulder seam. Thankfully I managed to tighten up the shoulder seams enough that they stay put. The bra carriers keep the straps hidden. It all worked out. If I make this again I may raise both the front and back bodice just a smidge more. Luckily I had a bra that didn't show.

It's pretty non-PC but since you asked, I am the current Western Regional Slow Smoke Champion. The first female ever to win a UPCA sanctioned event. As you can imagine it is a male dominated hobby.

My husband asked, "So when are you making the next one?" I just signed up for the dress fitting course on Craftsy and will incorporate what I learned here. :-)
