Instructions

The magazine featuring this pattern is currently out of print. I put updates on how I modified the traditional pattern on my blog.

The instructions to create the rosette for the sleeve are published for free on the blog.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Children

Style: Classic

Materials

Beads, polyester crepe fabric and polyester organza for the overlay.

What was your inspiration?

My daughter! She wanted a lime green dress for Christmas and named this one "Tiana" after Disney's "Princess and the Frog."

What are you most proud of?

That I actually completed it! The polyester fabrics were very difficult to work with and I had to deviate from some standard smocking practices to finish it. It half of it was hand-gathered--very time consuming. There is a lot of hand work on this dress.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

If you're smocking for the first time, use the traditional fabrics until you're used to the process.

Lovely dress. I have never done smocking so I may well have a go at it now that I have seen how well your's turned out. Well done!

Your daughter's dress is beautiful. You can see the TLC that went into making this frock. Your wee one has excellent and very definitive taste. She is most fortunate to have a mommy who can think outside the box and accommodate her sense of style.

I am so impressed! It's gorgeous, and you must be very patient to have kept those 2 slippery layers under control so beautifully!

Truely beautiful and what a lovely colour. The sparkle makes it very special. What a lucky little girl she is.
