Instructions

Here is my quilt top all ready for hand quilting!!!

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Traditional

Materials

100% Cotton Fabric

What was your inspiration?

I had a lot of fabric left over from my daughters quilt and I loved the fabric. I didn't have enough though to make the BOM quilt. So with fabric in hand I headed to the local quilt shop and I picked out enough co-oridinating fabric to make a lovely BOM Quilt.

What are you most proud of?

In the last year I have managed 3 goals. I got fit and stronger with a 210lb Deadlift, I finished my professional portfolio for my Dental Hygiene Profession, and I completed the top of BOM Quilt. I am handquilting it so I can't say that this will be completed this year. It takes months and months to hand quilt a quilt.

Hand quilting in not so bad. I am on my 3 hand quilted quilt for this year. The first one was a twin sized, the second a king sized and this one I am working on now is a queen sized. I will also be hand quilting my BOM quilt. I find it easier to finish the quilt if I only hand quilt a little bit each day. Good luck!

Love your quilt. The border gives the quilt a nice punch of color and way to use up the scraps. Good luck with the hand quilting.

Your quilt top has a lovely, fresh, clean look and I think it's great! Good luck with the hand quilting - you're a far braver woman than I am!

Hand quilt? Ugh! Love your quilt. What size sashing and borders did you use? I may "copy" your ideas, as I, too, have lots of left over georgeous fabric. Great job, and very creative.

For my quilt top I used 4" strips of fabric between all the blocks. When sashing the rows together I also used 4" strips but inorder to make sure I lined up the blocks well I used a 4" square between my 12.5" x4" strips. This ensured that the blocks all lined up. It was time consuming but extremly worth it. The picture is a bit deceiving though, my quilt ends with the 2.5" border...I will be adding my binding (also made of the same 2.5" strips but pressed in half) directly to this border. If you have any other questions let me know...I would love to talk more about it. I thought for days and days about how I was going to make my quilt large enough for my king size bed. It is a little shy in size to drap over the sides...but it is just so lovely that I don't really mind.

The sides of the quilt have a larger border...6". This gave me some more width for my king size bed.

Thanks ladies, I had so much fabric left that I knew I wanted to use it I just didn't know how. I added the border and loved the look. Now that I am beginning the hand quilting I know it will take a really long time... I can't wait to see everyone's finished quilt.

I love the inner border. I wrote it down, so maybe that is what I will do. Thanks for the excellent idea.
