I made a bag just like the instructions said to but the my second bag I made some adjustments that were just easier for me and my second bag came out a little bit better. Of course practice helps too. ;)
Some things I did different:
- First I put a small embroidery design 4 inches down from top of the bag (or where you would put the zipper at on the 13 inch side).
I cheated some and here is where I used my sewing machine.
- I top stitched next to the zipper to keep the fabric from catching in the zipper.
- I also sewed the tab together so that I didn't depend on the needle holding it and attached the tab with my sewing machine. This just made it easier for me. The first one I did with my serger just didn't line up right.
- Lastly, instead of drawing lines and trying to get the corners to line up (which my first project was a little different on each corner) I cut 2x2 squares from each corner. My fabric was so dark that my marker didn't show up and I couldn't find my chalk so this step helped me out.I made a bag just like the instructions said to but the my second bag I made some adjustments that were just easier for me and my second bag came out a little bit better. I used to be afraid of serger until I got my cover stitch machine. Then the serger was a piece of cake. :). I just kept trying and pulling out my manual. When one thread broke or needed to be retread then I'd retread all of my spools. Practice makes perfect. Good Luck!
It looks great - and a great gift idea. I've just finished my bag and am so pleased with myself as I didn't think I do anything as good. I love your chunky zipper too.
The bag looks great! Thanks for the ideas. I'm just beginning the class with a server I have had for 9 months and I'm learning so much.. I hope my bag turns out as good as yours.
wow..nice job. I like that you embroidered on it. This is my first surger and my first class, hope my turns out as well as yours. Thanks for sharing. :)
What a great gift idea I plan on making a bag in the serger class for my husbands shaving kit. Very nice embroidery work. Looks like Amy's class is going to be another sewing hit on Craftsy.
It really was a great class. Amy is a great instructor. I wish I could attend classes near by but my husband is in the Air Force and it always seems like when I plan to do something or go somewhere without the kids he ends up working or TDY. lol. That is what made this class so special to me. :)
