What was your inspiration?
I saw a photo of these and a client saw them as well, and she requested them for her kids birthday cake. I love the muppets and I wanted more experience with free molding fondant or gum paste. I did use fondant and found it very easy to work with.
What are you most proud of?
That I had only a photo to work from. No molds, just thinking through how big each piece would be and planning the little parts; eyeballs, tongue, etc. and how much of what color icing and how to pipe the details.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Make a list of all the colors of fondant you need and approximately how much of each color. This project doesn't use a large amount of fondant but many colors. Some of the characters have icing piped for additional features, blue on Sam the eagle, and Gonzo. Red and orange for Animal, yellow for Miss Piggy's hair. etc.
I did use a food marker (Wilton) for the tiny eyes, they come in a set and are SO handy for writing or drawing on dried fondant.
Make the faces ahead of time so they can set and harden slightly or fully before you set them on the cupcakes. Add the icing piped details AFTER they are on the cupcakes. Keep cool so they will set nicely.
Take lots of pictures! :)
