Mother's Day Quilt -2009 (Folkartsy)

my signature applique
backside of quilt

Instructions

I had made a Sunbonnet Sue quilt a few years back and thought I'd do something similar to that. So I made up my own "people" and those holding hands are married - and I have their date of marriage between their arms and each "person" has their first name and birthdate-those who are single have their hands on their hips. There are items - (hair color or dress color) or items on each "person" that ...

Materials

Cotton materials for quilt-top, flannel for the back, fusible bond for appliques, batting, quilt binding tape, fabric paint...embroidery thread - for the names and dates.

The compliments I get from making this quiltIt measures ~ 46" W x 56 " L

Love this quilt,, sitting here thinking how to make it my own.. Think I'll make each family member look similair to themselves and connect hands of each family.. I only have son and daughter. they each have 2 children..then mom and aunt.. so son can hold hands with kids.. Kinda like family tree... Thanks for the inspiration...

So cute, I have a new guest room, has cowboy theme, have a pattern for cowboy boots, just might take your idea of birthday & anniversary dates of every one and add them to the design. Fun! Thanks for the inspiration!

What do the background colors indicate....I'm guessing yellow = married into the family...but I'm laughing out loud at the green backgroud...especially since she has an X on her dress....is this a previous spouse....???? I love the quilt, thanks for sharing.
Deena on craftsy.com
Feb 10, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
no - I did not really have any correlation to the backgrounds...but the one at the top - with the green background is my MOM - who started it all... and it is not and X on her dress but a butterfly...LOL Thanks for the comments

I made a quilt for my mother's 90th birthday that had all of her grandkids hand prints on it, and also her Great granddaughter's hand print. I had each grandchild send me a copy of their hands, then I printed them out and cut them out of material that I had made something for them and appliqued them on a quilt. I made them like flower blossoms (a bouquet in a vase). I put each grandchild's name under each of their hands so Mom would know who's was who. Turned out quit well, if I do say so myself. Barbara

What a wonderful quilt to give to your mum. The way you have adapted a pattern to make the different family members & their relationships to each other is lovely and different. Keep up the good work. It is also pleasing to see that you have labelled your quilt which is something we all should do but often don't!

I love this quilt! I have never quilted before but would like to keep the tradition alive in my family. My grandmothers quilted and well the next generation got lazy. I want to revive the tradition to pass down to my children. I would love to start with this pattern to give to both my mother and mother-in-law for christmas. I tried to get pattern from icon to no avail. Please help!

Gorgeous! It is sooooo much nicer than a traditional 'memory' quilt, which I often think of as morbid in a way. This is such a happier alternative, and so personal! Brilliant!
