Had viewed Maria Elkins video for doing color-block portraits and thought it would work out great for a photo of my S.O. and his mom as a gift for her.Difficulty:
Category: Quilting
Type of item: Home Decor
For: Women
Style: Whimsical, Romantic, Funky
Materials
Cotton commercial print fabric, monofilament thread, fusible web, poly-blend thread, cotton batting
What was your inspiration?
The photo was shot by her granddaughter and is of her and her youngest son. I feel that the focus on Mother's Day is a lot on moms with their young children but not a lot of attention is given to mother's and their grown sons. My guy has a fabulous relationship with his mom - she is very special and I wanted to do this for her. It's one of her favorite photos.
What are you most proud of?
I was able to successfully use monofilament thread for the first time after many previous attempts - I had just about given up on ever being able to use it. I was also amazed at how emotional she was when she opened it (she lives hundreds of miles from us). To know that something that I enjoy doing brought joy to someone else was such a great feeling.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Don't get caught up of trying to replicate something exactly. Go with the flow - the end result is always better than what we could have achieved no matter how meticulously planned out the project is at the start..
