Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this piece. I would describe this painting as being a mix of impressionism and realism. I really didn't use a photograph for this painting, just my memory of visiting there. I remember being in awe of the majesty of the area, and how it made me feel. I used a 24" x 32" stretched canvas. I first painted the sky and clouds using Artist Loft Gesso and a mixture of 3 different blues and a tad bit of violet to give the sky its depth. The under-painting of the desert floor was pretty easy for me, as I grew up in the southwest, so the colors are simple for me to create. Mainly is Burnt Sienna, Red and yellow Ochre and some gesso to make it opaque. There is also some Raw Umber to help create the shadowed areas. Lemon yellow, yellow ochre, gesso and orange were used to create the high-lights on the monolith, and the cracks in it were created using the same dark mix of colors I used for the shadowed area. This painting was not meant to give an accurate representation of the area, it was meant to create the sense of awe I felt when I stood out on the desert floor and saw Monument Valley for the first time.
