Mondrian Quilt

Simple, yet eye catching, I think.

Simple, yet eye catching, I think.
Wanted some art that I could sleep under
Side view of Mondrian quilt.
Inspiration was this art print.

Pattern Info

Pattern info for this project can be found here:
Composition with Red, Blue, Yellow, by Piet Mondrian

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Mod, Funky

Materials

Cotton fabric, fleece batting

What was your inspiration?

I like geometric designs, and art deco. The artist Piet Mondrian has this painting, which I loved, and thought it would look cool as a quilt. Very easy to make.

What are you most proud of?

The colors are spot on with the painting. It has clean lines, and I was able to sew straight for a long time, so I didn't mess up the edges! Yay, me! LOL

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Just have fun. It comes together quickly. I used a fleece material, since the middle of the color blocks are not quilted. I just quilted around the black, so you need a good batting that won't shift around when the quilt is used, or washed.

Hi, Margieoh. There is no pattern, I designed it myself. I just took an image of the art piece from the internet, printed it, and measured it, then converted it to a larger scale. I usually measure in centimeters, and use one cm. to equal 1, 2, 3, 4 inches-whatever I want! Graph paper is my friend when I make designs. I just drew until I liked the composition and counted the squares. I know these are general instructions, but I really didn't do exact measurements. I hope this helps.

Very cool! This is such a great painting, and you did an incredible job! Congrats on the straight lines! I've been thinking how cool it would be to do something like this with Sonia Delaunay paintings or Rothko! :)

This reminds me of the late 60's early 70's. We use to wear dresses like this! Cool!
