Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Knit This: Mastering Lace Shawls »

Instructions

I enlarged the original pattern by adding 3 k rows, 1 eyelet row and 3k rows between Planet and Nova patterns.

I also metalsmith (in sterling, copper and brass). Most recently I have been taking vintage earrings and brooches and remaking them into shawl/scarf jewelry. The photo shows a few I made in Jan. 2012.

Difficulty:

Category: Knitting

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Traditional, Romantic, Retro / Vintage

Materials

Claremont from WEBS--a wool and silk fingering blend

What was your inspiration?

My sister and I both signed up for the course and made Skywalker. We live over 1000 miles apart but this project help us stay connected by sharing in the challenges and successes. It was great fun.

What are you most proud of?

I finished it! This my first lace project,, first attempt at chart reading and the most complicated item I have ever made. As I was finishing it, a lady in my quilt group told me she was going to have to undergo Chemo. I finished the shawl and gave it to her to serve as a "soft hug" whenever she needs one. She was delighted and it gve me great pleasure to see it on her.

I plan on making my own soon.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Use lifelines!! I ended up using them every 3 or 4 rows but I knew if I made a mistake I could recover--let me be more secure in my knitting.

Thanks for sharing the advice about the lifelines & the best of luck with it, the second time around...now I feel lazy for not having started my first.

Your metal work shawl pins are beautiful as is the shawl...what a great idea salvaging old jewelry...love shawl color...it really showcases the metals you use...
