This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Stupendous Stitching: Adventures in Surface Design »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Casual, Mod, Hipster

Materials

White on White patterned cotton fabric, Pellon interfacing, Sulky Rayon thread

What was your inspiration?

The colors and esthetics of the "Modern Quilt" Movement.

What are you most proud of?

I like the way the design came out. I can just imagine each block being slightly different since I never plan my work so I think the quilt will have a lot of movement. I also can't wait to machine quilt in the white spaces to ensure that the decorative machine stitching really pops off the top.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Draw some lines on paper before you start to get an idea of what you want to do. You can also draw your lines lightly with pencil and then stitch over them.

I ALWAYS seem to love circular quilting, and you know we love your Stupendous Stitching, so what is not to love?? I decided to inset irregular shapes of stupendous stitchery bordered by panels of tiny pleats, etc, - which is fussier than your idea, so I think I'll simplify things and just make a circular box pillow! I thought you wanted the stabilizer to be pretty heavy; did you use the same weight for your pillow?

Did you stabilize the block before stitching? If so, what did you use that won't make the quilt stiff?
Carol Ann Waugh on craftsy.com
Jun 05, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Yes, you need to use fusible interfacing so the decorative stitches behave properly. For the pillow, I left it in, for a quilt, I would cut away the stabilizer where it wasn't under the stitching.

The funny thing about this posting is that you intended it to be a stitching idea for modern quilters to incorporate in to fresh, new quilts. What I see when I look at this block is vintage 50's and 60's smocked children's dresses and rompers! Very Polly Flinder! I love it, thanks for sharing all of your wonderful ideas with us.

It reminds me of a quilt as you go, which I have done and the squares were 7 x 7. That same technique would work for this and is basically the same type of technique - sewing all the layers first and then putting them together by using sashing strips/binding strips. If this were going to be a "loving" quilt it may be too hard with all the different fibers, but as an Art quilt - it would be interesting to see how you could sew the blocks together with different fabrics perhaps raw edge or strips sewn down with the same machine stitching you used on the blocks? Interesting idea - now I want to go and figure out how that would work...

Hi Carol, this quilt block is something I wouldn't have thought of, but it gives me a springboard for other uses of the stupendous stitching techniques. I have a different idea yet of how I want to use your technique, but since I'll be moving house at some point in the next month or so, I don't think I'll get at it for some time, unfortunately. Can't wait to really "dig in" to this class, though.

I've just watched your show on TQS Carol - thanks for the link. I had already watched the slide show of your work which was fabulous, really enjoyed seeing your later works too. I see you're getting more into print & dye which I love too, especially the deconstructed screen printing. Do you do that kind of thing in your studio space? The above piece has lots of potential for Modern quilts - could be the start of a whole new way of working for quilters!

My concern has been mentioned that interfacing rather than tear or wash away stabilizer might be too stiff. Carol, you addressed that and unless there is heavy stitching not much is needed. I like the idea of washable fiber couching or stitches as well but less dense that for a wall hanging, anything that does not take away the softness of a quilt. having said that dense machine quilting is not very soft either. I had been tossing around ideas too but need to finish my class project before I get ahead of myself!

I can see this being used w/ rectagles of varying sizes and with the couching! Sashing can pull it all together. By attaching the sashing you can "catch" the couched ends. This appeals to the practical accountant side of me!! There are only so many places for me to hang the art work. Also could be used in placemats etc. I'm ready to go!

You could consider making this the entire quilt top design and then filling in with more stitching in the 4 corners that it creates. Probably could even add a little to the center once it's enlarged but I'd do it with pastel colors so it doesn't pull the eye away from the dramatic design.

I love the ability to be spontaneous with design and stitching and had been considering other applications for the Stupendous Stitching technique... love the quilt idea... and can envision so many opportunities for creativity. Love the idea of a potential class to incorporate the technique within a quilt. Would also be interested in seeing application of this technique in other items - fashion or accessories. I had been mulling over how I want to incorporate it and would love to see a class as a springboard for inspiration. Thank you for keeping us inspired. :)

Really interesting - can see all kinds of possibilities. Carol, how stiff does the fabric feel using the Pellon interfacing? I'm thinking of trying this using a tear away stabilizer so it would be as soft as possible. There is also a type of stabilizer that mostly washes out (over time) but does leave some fibers under the stitching - that might work also. OK, now you've got me thinking & I probably need to do some experimenting also - so it's all your fault if I don't get anything else done for the next few days!
Carol Ann Waugh on craftsy.com
