Mittens with convertible top

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Mittens and Gloves Galore »

Instructions

Be careful about how short you make the flap. Mine is too short..i swear it was going to be too big and I went by the pattern but it hits my tips and then some and i dont like it. i would add an extra 1.2-1 inch to the point before you start the decreasing personally.. i did do the flap ribbing wrong..2x2 instead of 1x1..of course i noticed this after the fact so i didnt take it out.

Difficulty:

Category: Knitting

Materials

Miss Babs Yowsa for main body with cascade 220 superwash for flap. Size 8 circulars. Middle size

What was your inspiration?

I love miss babs yarn- was trying to make some mittens with the left overs from a cowl

What are you most proud of?

taking my time trying to learn this the right way

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Use cheap yarn because ive done two different mitts of the 5 in 1 and i dont like either one!

I agree about using cheaper yarn to try out a pattern. I don't like to spend a lot of money for something I don't like working on. You did a great job, What didn't you like about the pattern?or mittens?

thanks!- Well i dont know if it was me or the mittens but the bind off wasnt working for me..too tight. I tried using a larger needle to bind off and i used the rib bind off. Guess i needed to do it even looser. It could just be my hands- they arent petite. I guess i didnt like the way they looked on my hands. I will try again after i venture on to the next pair in the series.

I also used cheap yarn for the first two pair of plain mitts. I usually use a size 7 for worsted weight yarn so i did the swatch and looked lie the size 8 is what the swatch showed but when I knit the mitts the cuff was too wide. Therefore I went back to size 6 for the cuff and size 7 for the hand. Now I am afraid of using my expensive yarn. Help I don't understand what I am doing wrong.

Well I would go by the swatch. Use whatever size needle gives you the correct amount of stitches in an inch. If the cuff is too wide go down a size in the actual mitten. It has a lot if stretch.

you can always take out the mitten and re use your expensive yarn.. i just love the way the premium yarns feel and dont split compared to the others

Well this pair turned out great, and of course they are the most perfect color!

Maly I am worried by the comment/advice to use cheap yarn because she didn't like the way either of her mittens turned out so far. I want to make my mittnes for Christmas presents for a couple sisters and Mom, and they have already dupplied the (nice) yarn--Misti ALpaca, Baby Alpaca, and Recycled Wool. I don't have time to make a bunch of cheap mittens I don't like! So--I am thinking, better start on an easy gradient--I have knitted the cuff of firs pair so far--no problems, I WAS going to make the convertibles, but I guess it is SAFER to make the first pair plain old mittens--and then do the NEXT hardest thing. WOuld the next hardest thing be CONVERTIBLES? Then the gloves? (Gloves seem the hardest...but I am not sure...Of ALL the patterns you supplied for the class, would you please rate them from easiest to hardest--(including the thrumbed ones and faire isles? I find the written directions rather overwhelming for most of these beyond the cuffs...sooo...Shall I play it safe and do my first pair just mittens (out of the Recycled Wool)?
