This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Jean-ius: Reverse Engineer Your Favorite Fit »

Instructions

I really enjoyed going back to the techniques shared by the Craftsy instructor Kenneth D. King (Jean-ius). I drafted these jeans using primarily Joseph-Armstrong's jeans foundation (5th Ed.) instead of copying a pair of jeans I already owned, but I utilized many of King's tips and tricks. I have the adaptation I used to do this posted on the following blog if anyone is interested ...

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Men

Style: Casual, Traditional

Materials

Heavy weight denim (12.5 oz to 15.5 that I pre-shrunk for this particular pair), one 17mm jeans button, four 14mm jeans buttons for the fly, rivets, #30 jeans thread and regular thread in the bobbin to match the topstitching.

What was your inspiration?

Denim and jeans culture... and Ande Whall and Roy Slaper. Anyone interested in jeans should check out their websites and videos. They both create jeans commercially, but do so solely by themselves. They create each piece from start to finish, using traditional techniques. Pretty cool.

What are you most proud of?

These jeans fit me well. I wear them a lot.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Make sure you have a good 30 hours plus to complete this project.

Great job, beautiful topstitching (love the rounded patch-pocket stitching!), nice button-fly. What is your source for the rivets and jeans-buttons?

I just posted a variation of these jeans on my projects. I straightened the out seam on the new jeans so I could keep the selvage edge as the outer seam finish.

Wow now that is a pair of jeans that in no way looks home made. Thank you for all the helpful information. I will be off now to see your blog.

Can you tell us more about the denim you used?

This particular denim was purchased years ago in Vancouver BC at a place called Dress Sew. It is not a selvage denim, but it is wearing exceptionally well. It is super heavy, probably 15.5 oz denim.

I just recently finished another pair though. I straightened the outside seams and redrafted the inseams for style. On that pair I used a medium weight selvage denim by Candiani. They turned out pretty cool. I haven't washed those yet so I can't speak to the fade.
