What was your inspiration?

Friends of mine were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. Their daughter asked me for help in creating a memory quilt for them. She hadn't quilted before and with the date fast approaching, I offered to make it for her. She printed out all the photos (about 40 of them) on fabric sheets and mailed them to me. I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do with them. So, I just started framing each photo with different strips of fabric from my stash, played around with the placement of each and before I knew it, it was finished in time.

What are you most proud of?

The fact that I got it finished in time and my friends absolutely loved it! Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the celebration due to illness but I was told it was a big hit.

Where can I learn to do the printing of photos on fabric sheets? My husbands daughter passed away last year at the age of 20 and I want to do a quilt for him with some of her pictures and some of her t-shirts. The photos in that quilt look so clear. What a wonderful gift.

I am so sorry for your loss. There are many fabric sheets to choose from. For this project as well as a special label I designed for my mother's quilts that she made in the 1960s or 1970s, I went to Joanne Fabrics and bought Inkjet Printable Fabric Sew-On labels by Dritz, Printed Treasures. You just scan the photos onto your computer, crop or adjust them however you want, then put the fabric sheet into your printer and print. I really like the printed ones better than the iron-on sheets. (The iron-on have a sheen that I don't care for.) After they're printed, you peel off the paper backing and sew them as you would any other block. Good luck. If I can answer any more questions, please feel free to contact me.

I just noticed an error in my previous reply. I used Inkjet Printable Fabric Sew-On by Dritz.... (they are not "labels").

If you only have a few photos that you want to incorporate into a t-shirt quilt you can get a picture put on a T-shirt at Sam's club for only $10. That is what I did for my husbands quilt that way it was t-shirt fabric and blended nicely with the other t-shirts. Look under my projects on craftsy for it.

This is my quilt and I absolutely love it. We especially love it because we can appreciate how much work went into making it and that it was made with love. A big Thank You again Doris.
