Instructions

If you use a paper mache box, basecoat it with white so the color you want to be the background for your design is a true color. Paper mache is grayish or brownish so it will mute a color. The white basecoat will avoid a muted color. Box #5 is a photo box that you can buy at any craft store.

What was your inspiration?

People keep all kinds of memory items. Post cards, cards, pictures kids draw or whatever. These are boxes to keep those memory items.
Some painting groups donate boxes like these to childrens wards in hospitals. They are given to parents who have lost a child to sickness or accident.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

These are painted using the One Stroke method of decorative painting, an easy and fun method of painting items. You can find out more about this method at dewberrycrafts.com. I am a One Stroke certified instructor. You can find an instructor in your area by visiting the web site above and selecting Find a Teacher.

To get started, go to dewberrycrafts.com which is Donna Dewberry's website. She created this method of decorative painting. At the top of the page there is a link Find a Teacher (or instructor) fill in your zip code or city and click search, and it will list any certified instructors for you. Good luck.

Your box is lovely. The painting technique gives it a vintage look. I am not familiar with the One Stroke method of decorative painting and anticipate learning more about it.
